Maintaining Your Carpet's Warranty
Carpet is an investment. In addition to the obvious financial investment, you’ve also invested your time shopping, comparing, and ultimately selecting your carpet. Once your carpet is installed in your home, you can rest easy… with peace of mind knowing that after all, your carpet has a warranty.
Most major carpet manufacturers offer a 10 year warranty and some up to 25 years. The terms and conditions of that warranty, however, are rarely disclosed at the time of purchase. For instance, did you know that regular professional carpet cleaning (using the hot water/steam cleaning method) is required to maintain your warranty? The frequency of professional carpet cleaning required varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and ranges anywhere from 9 to 18 months, but is also “dependent on the traffic” in your particular home. Should you want to file a claim and aren’t able to provide receipts from professional carpet cleaning companies your claim will be denied and your warranty null and void. Does your carpet warranty include stains? If it does, be aware that not all stains are covered. Non-food stains such as pet urine, fecal stains, vomit are not covered. Likewise, any chemicals like bleach, drain cleaners, or fertilizers are not covered either. Finally, even some food stains are also excluded from your warranty – especially if they contain certain color or pigments. Tea, for instance, is often not covered nor is yellow mustard. Even more elusive, when it comes to stain warranty caveats, is the requirement that Scotchgard, or similar Teflon protectant, be reapplied after professional carpet cleaning. |
